Below is a list of questions we are often asked about who can become a member of NDYC:

How old do I have to be?

You must be between 11 to 18 years old. However we sometimes allow a bit of flexibility outside of these ages where we agree it is appropriate - contact us to discuss this further.

Do I have to be Deaf to be allowed to come?

No! Anyone with any degree of hearing loss can come; whether they are Deaf, partly Deaf, hard of hearing or hearing.

Do I have to use sign language?

No! It doesn't matter how you prefer to communicate, whether you prefer to speak/lipread, sign in BSL (British Sign Language) or use SSE (Sign Supported English), you are more than welcome. We only ask that you respect everyone else at the club. Our Leader team all use different methods of communication themselves, so are fully aware of all the different ways to communicate.

Can I bring a brother/sister/friend with me?

Of course you can, as long as they are between 12 and 18 years old. They don't have to be Deaf, but they must be interested in Deafness and willing to meet other Deaf youths.

I'm a parent, can I stay at NDYC while my child is there?

We try and encourage parents to leave their children at NDYC so that they have a proper 'break' from home life. However we also understand that every child's needs are different, so you may feel it is more appropriate for someone to be present, especially if they are new to NDYC. We have a lounge with a TV which you can use, however it would be best to talk to the Leader Team first. Otherwise, we are on the city doorstep, and with Thursday evenings being late-night shopping, you couldn't be in a better place!

We understand that as parents, naturally your child's well-being is important to you. We have policies and procedures in place to make sure your child is kept as safe as possible while at NDYC - see our Safeguarding Children page for more information.

I'm interested! Can I have a membership form?

You can get a copy from our Downloads Page. If you can't print this at home, we have copies at NDYC, however you must have a parent/guardian with you when you first come to NDYC so they can sign the parental consent. Please also let us know in advance by contacting us.
